Overview
Take a trip to Aswan on your Egypt vacation.
Aswan is a busy market city and popular tourist centre found just north of the Aswan Dam on the east bank of the Nile River. It is Egypt’s hottest and driest inhabited city and has been a favourite winter resort for Egyptians since early in the 19th century. It is also a popular stopover for visitors on an Egypt tour.
Aswan sits on the site of the ancient city of Swentet. Due to its proximity to the Nile, Swentet was Egypt’s first town and served as the Ancient Egyptians’ gateway to Africa. It was also an important military station and acted as a garrison town under every dynasty.
Today, Aswan is considered Egypt’s sunniest city and is smaller and more relaxed than Cairo and Luxor. It is home to the famous Aswan High Dam which was built in the 1960s and helped to control the annual flooding of the Nile. It is also home to the Tombs of the Nobles, an area in the northern hills of the west bank that are filled with the tombs of princes dating from the Old Kingdom to the Roman period.
The joy of Aswan on Egypt tours is its relaxed atmosphere and that is it small enough to walk around, offering some of the most stunning settings found along the Nile. In fact, many claim that the Nile is at its most beautiful in Aswan.
