Adelaide

Overview

Adelaide is a picturesque city with a relaxed atmosphere. As the capital of South Australia and the country's fifth-largest city, it's ideal for walking, with plentiful parks and historical architecture. Planned with wide boulevards and large public spaces, Adelaide is surrounded by the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Adelaide Hills and is well known for its festivals, including the world's largest cabaret festival, and the biannual Adelaide Festival, which features opera, theatre and other types of entertainment.

On Adelaide's doorstep, you can sip your way through the famous Barossa Valley wine region, hop on a local tram to the charming seaside resort of Glenelg or take a short flight or ferry ride to Kangaroo Island, where you can see perhaps the most diverse collection of uniquely Australian animals in their natural habitat.

Adelaide is also the starting point of the very special Indian Pacific or Ghan trains. The Indian Pacific travels west to Perth, while the latter travels north to Alice Springs and Darwin. Both offer great ways to see the more remote, yet scenic side of the Australian outback.
