Located just one hour outside Sydney, the region of the Blue Mountains is a World Heritage Site filled with tall forests, canyons, sandstone cliffs, bushland and rainforests. It derives its name from a blue haze that falls over the mountains and which is actually a mist of oil released by the eucalyptus trees. Something that will keep you gazing at it on an Australia vacation is the Three Sisters, a massive rock trio named after an aboriginal legend eroded into interesting and dramatic shapes.
The Jenolan Caves, a vast network of limestone caves of which ten are open to the public, have underground rivers and chambers where you can walk on trails One is to a shallow cave in the Aboriginal campsite of Lyrebird Dell that has existed for some 12, 000 years.
